2011-2012 SOUTHWEST
DISTRICT
WINTER TOURNAMENT NEWSLETTER
All athletes, coaches, parents, and school administrators in the Southwest will see many changes in the tournament structure as we soon embark upon Winter Athletic programs. The 2011-2012 school year is the first of a new two-year cycle With this cycle comes the reconfiguration of divisions in which schools are placed with possibly a new placement for tournament participation.
GYMNASTICS
Lakota East will again host the tournament. One change will be in the admission prices. Admission will be $6.00 per session with an all-session pass costing $10.00.
GIRL’S BASKETBALL
One significant change in Division I will be loss of one qualifier to the regional tournaments. After much thought and deliberation, the board decided to divide sectional sites into small mini-sectional tournaments with each one qualifying one team to the District Tournament. In the Dayton area, Lebanon High School (Bill Stewart, manager) replaces Miamisburg High School as a site.
Division II remains
the same. Sites do not change.
Division III is picking up one additional qualifier to the regional tournaments. Fairfield, Tipp City, and Wilmington remain hosting sites while Monroe ( Dave Bauer, manager) becomes the new site. Each site will send two sectional winners to the Districts held again at Springfield High School.
Division IV will see changes as well. Sites remain the same: Brookville, Monroe, and Sidney. Considering the location of schools in this division, the board created mini-sectionals with Brookville qualifying three winners, Sidney qualifying two, and Monroe qualifying one to the District Tournament at Tipp City High School.
BOY’S BASKETBALL
After evaluation of last year’s tournament, it was decided to again start the tournament on a weekend, with second round games on the following Tuesday and Wednesday nights, followed by sectional finals on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday depending on the division. In Divisions I and III, sectional finals will be held at three sites: Cintas, University of Cincinnati, or University of Dayton.
Division I. In this division the Southwest lost one qualifier to the regional tournament. We will now send four to the Regionals. Mini-sectionals will be held at each hosting site with Hamilton High School (Mike Delapina, manager) becoming a new hosting site. In the Dayton area, Trotwood High School ( Guy Fogel, new manager) will host two sectionals while Centerville, High School hosts one.
Division II. A new site will be used in this division. Miamisburg High School (Tom Hathaway, manager) will be the new site. All other sites remain the same.
Division III. Mini-sectionals will again be used: Monroe, Turpin, and Western Brown in the south while Bellbrook, Tecumseh, and Tipp City will host in the north.
Division IV. All sites remain the same with no changes in managers.
WRESTLING
Division I. As happened in basketball, one qualifier was lost in this wrestling division. With the loss of the qualifier and reconfiguration of teams at sites, one-day tournaments could not be conducted. Two-day sectionals will be held at Centerville High School, Hamilton High School (Mike Delapina, manager), and Lebanon High School (Bill Stewart, manager). Each site will send the top four finishers in each weight class to the districts.
Division II. A new site for Division II will be Western Brown High School (Tim Cook, manager). The other sites remain the same: Eaton and Tipp City. A new twist this year is that four Southwest schools will go to the Southeast for sectional tournaments: Clinton Massie, Greenon, Springfield Shawnee, and Wilmington High Schools. The top four finishers in each weight class at Tipp City will go to the Northwest for District competition while the other sites will go to Goshen High School for District competition. The Tipp City sectional will be a one day tournament.
Division III. The Southwest again picks up qualifiers lost two years ago. Having additional qualifiers enables the Southwest to go back to three sectional sites: Blanchester ( Ron Duncan, manager), Carlisle ( Mark Townsley, manager), and Sidney Lehman High Schools. Each site will send the top four finishers in each weight class along with the top four finishers from Northwest District to the District competition at Trent Arena, Kettering, Ohio.
A new admission policy has been put in place for this year’s tournament. The admission for a one-day tournament will be as follows: $12.00 for session one and $6.00 for session two. An All-session pass will be $15.00. The admission for two-day tournaments will be as follows: $12.00 for both sessions one and two, $6.00 for session three, $7.00 for session four.
